Home DM News Eternity Ring Style Guide

Eternity bands, adorned with dazzling diamonds and timeless sparkle, are cherished additions to any jewellery collection. Whether you’re marking a special occasion, celebrating a milestone, or indulging in luxury, these stunning bands are the perfect complement to any outfit or gift and are traditionally worn alongside one’s wedding band and engagement ring.

Full eternity ring or half eternity ring?

There are two main styles of eternity rings: full eternity rings and half eternity rings.

Full eternity rings are set with stones (typically diamonds) around the entire band. Gracefully slim and extravagant in their finish, these subtle yet statement pieces can be worn between an engagement ring and a wedding band, although they are equally stunning when worn alone on the right hand.

A half-eternity ring is set with stones halfway around the band and can range in their number of gemstones. The stones may be of uniform shape and size, or the half-eternity ring may have a tapered design with gems of graduating sizes.

The different types of cuts

Eternity rings can be made with a variety of diamond cuts, including emerald, baguette, princess and asscher cut.

The cut of a ring refers to the proportions, angles, and symmetry of a diamond, which determines how it reflects light. A well-cut diamond is more brilliant and sparkly and will have a higher value. Factors that affect the cut of a diamond include facets, proportions, symmetry and polish. Find out more about diamond cuts through our in-depth guide on the 4 C’s of diamond jewellery.

Emerald Cut Eternity Ring

An emerald eternity ring combines geometry, elegance, and sleekness, crafted with emerald-cut diamonds featured on the band. These widely popular and timeless designs can be found on full and half-eternity rings and are finished with a sparkling, delicate finish, producing a hall-of-mirrors effect.

Baguette Cut Eternity Ring

Baguette-cut rings are ideal if you want to create an elegant and sophisticated look rather than appear flashy. When crafted into an eternity ring, baguette diamonds are sleek and classic, typically alternated with princess cut diamonds for an eternity ring that has added texture. Baguette diamond eternity rings can also contain round brilliant diamonds for a ring with vintage-inspired charm.

Princess Cut Eternity Ring

Princess cut diamonds have a square appearance and are widely used in diamond eternity rings due to sets sitting closely together, forming an almost seamless band of brilliance. Princess cut diamond eternity rings have a contemporary elegance that is considered timeless in the world of jewellery.

Asscher Cut Eternity Ring

Similar to an emerald cut eternity rings, asscher cut eternity rings are crafted with a clean, sharp aesthetic. The large step facets, higher crown, and smaller table of the asscher cut eternity rings allow them to produce more brilliance and a somewhat octagonal shape.

The different eternity ring settings

There are four main eternity ring setting types, claw set, channel set, pavé set and cut-down set. All of these are designed to hold different diamond shapes and are usually crafted in platinum or white and yellow gold.

Claw set

Claw-set eternity rings are one of the most classic and traditional settings, featuring four prongs that elegantly rise from the band, securely holding each diamond in place. One of the key features of claw-set eternity rings is their versatility, as they can effortlessly accommodate a wide range of diamond shapes and sizes and fit well into a selection of engagement ring and wedding band styles.

Channel set

In a channel-set eternity ring, the diamonds are nestled within a metal channel, creating a seamless row without any metal separating them. With no prongs holding the stones, they sit closely together, giving the illusion of an invisible and seamless setting. Channel setting rings offer exceptional security, as the surrounding metal offers excellent protection against everyday wear and accidental knocks, shielding the diamonds from any damage.

Pave set

Pavé-set eternity rings are arranged closely together, featuring clusters of small, encrusted diamonds that enhance the overall brilliance of the piece and create a dazzling effect. These intricate designs are ideal for those looking for a dainty yet luxurious feel to their eternity ring, crafted in a compact yet elegant aesthetic.

Cut town set

Cut-down set eternity rings are designed to maximise the diamond’s brilliance with minimal interference from metals. Rather than relying on metal bands to secure the stones, the cut-down setting uses strategically placed prongs to hold each diamond in place, creating a sleek and elegant look.
