The debut of The World of David Morris, the major book release from the House of David Morris, offers a narrative of the House’s story like never seen before. Peppered with personal anecdotes, eclectic inspirations and – naturally – fabulous jewels, it is a perfect reflection of the House today: a proudly family-run company, very much focused on the now.
Inviting readers behind the scenes at the House’s London flagship, The World of David Morris is written by revered jewellery editor Annabel Davidson. Already well-versed in the House’s jewels, she has captured the David Morris brand with personality and soul, with the traditional formality of a coffee table book replaced by a warm, accessible tone that makes for very easy reading. A fascinating insight into how vision and innovation are the key to maintaining a thriving family jewellery dynasty, at its heart is Jeremy Morris, CEO and Creative Director of David Morris.
Published by Rizzoli internationally, the 256-page coffee table book showcases many different voices: sisters Cecily and Phoebe, the latest generation of the Morris family to follow in their father’s footsteps; the designers who work closely with Jeremy Morris in the studio at 180 New Bond Street; and the master craftspeople who have worked in the High Jewellery workshop on the top floor for over 30 years. The loudest voice by far is that of Jeremy himself. His evolution of the business since he took over in 2003 is succinctly captured within its pages, with many of the chapters narrated by the creative whirlwind.
The World of David Morris tells a very different story to the House’s only previous publication, created to celebrate 50 years of David Morris. In 2022, the House marked its 60th anniversary. At the peak of his career, Jeremy Morris infiltrates almost every page of this beautifully illustrated book, narrating his quest to find Conch pearls in the Bahamas, recalling parties in Mykonos and speaking fondly of some of the unforgettable stones that have passed through his hands.
All this is accompanied by a series of collages, some of which have been created by London-based photographer and filmmaker Mark Lebon, a close friend of Jeremy. Layering images of collectables, art and ephemera from Jeremy’s home with gouaches, patterns and contact sheets from archive jewellery shoots, reinforce just how personal this book is for him.
Complementing the storytelling are newly created model shots and still-lifes showcasing the trove of pieces created by Jeremy and his team in recent years, accompanied by contemporary sketches, gouaches, previously unpublished workshop images and stunning shots of signature David Morris jewels, including Paraiba tourmalines, pink diamonds, Pigeon’s Blood rubies and Kashmir sapphires. Every page reveals a new masterpiece, be it a Colombian emerald, cut in an unexpected cabochon shape, or a close-up of an extraordinary necklace that pays homage to Ancient Egypt.
Cecily Morris, Brand Content Manager, and Phoebe Morris, Special Projects Coordinator, oversaw the creation of the new book:
“A window into David Morris as it is today, The World of David Morris opens the door to parts of our business that have remained private until now. Our father is a modern-day raconteur, and it has been such a joy working with him to tell his personal stories, and those who have worked alongside him for decades.”
Launching on 17 September 2024, The World of David Morris will be available to purchase on the Rizzoli and David Morris websites and in-store at the brand’s global flagships. Marking an exciting new milestone for the House, it is a book to read and revisit, dipping in and out of with pleasure.
