How to care for your timepiece

Whether you want to keep your new timepiece crisp and pristine or have recently been gifted a special family heirloom, you will want to keep it looking and working its best for years to come. Timepieces can be crafted in a range of different metals and finishings, often embellished with rare gemstones and dazzling diamonds, with each model requiring its own way of maintaining quality. When it comes to cleaning, maintaining and storing a timepiece, you will need to consider the different fabrics and adornments it endures, especially if it is a piece that you wear on a daily basis.

Although the research is available and you can care for a timepiece at home, it is always a good idea to contact the seller or a jewellery expert to clean your piece, especially if it includes stones such as white diamonds, emeralds, sapphires or other rare gems. To speak to a David Morris expert and enquire about our timepiece care, contact one of our worldwide boutiques or arrange a consultation.

How to clean a watch

A soft, lint-free cotton cloth is ideal for when cleaning the case, glass or band of your watch to remove any signs of stains and water spots. This can be done daily to retain shine.

Over time, dirt, dust, oil and other natural fibres can build up in your watch’s links and bracelet, which is why you should consider giving your timepiece a deep clean every few months or so. To do this, you can remove the bracelet from your watch and give it a thorough clean in warm water, ensuring it is completely dry before reattaching it to your wrist.

If your watch has gemstones or is made of gold or platinum, you can find out more about their specific requirements through our in-depth guides.

How to clean a leather watch strap

To maintain the quality of your leather band, any moisture should be wiped off with a dry cloth or paper towel immediately and it should be kept away from any moisture or wet environments. Perspiration can wash out the natural oils of a leather band, causing it to deteriorate over time so it’s important to keep this part of a watch extra dry and clean from any marks. It is also encouraged to wear your band loosely around your wrist to allow the air to circulate and to avoid perspiration.

How to store a watch

Many luxury timepieces are not worn every day and are instead used for special occasions or are stored away as collection pieces. Whether you have one luxury watch or many, knowing how to store them is essential.

Whilst some watch owners prefer to keep all their timepieces on display, others prefer to keep them in storage, locked away safely until they are ready to be worn. Storage solutions such as a watch box or a watch pouch ensure that your timepiece is being kept in a soft-to-touch place, protected from light, dirt and grim and potential external damages. These items typically come in leather, suede, silk or velvet, offering your watch a cushioned space to sit.

This is also an important element to consider if you’re travelling as you will want to ensure that your watch is being kept in a safe and secure place where it can’t get scratched or move around easily.
